Crawford Holling was born in Theresa, New York, and came to Canada at the age of 5. He became a zoologist and ecologist. His central thesis emphasizes understanding how systems maintain their structure in the face of disturbances, rather than trying to control variation. He is a recipient of the Mercer Award and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Sciences and Art.
